The Son of God Is Not God

THOSE WHO PREACH that the Lord Jesus Christ is God argue that since Christ was conceived of the Holy Spirit (Matt. 1:20), He is God in nature or state of being. They claim that Jesus has a dual nature ― human and divine (or God) ― having been born of a human mother and being God’s only begotten Son.

Is their argument valid? Is their understanding correct? Is it true that being conceived of the Holy Spirit and having no human father make Jesus Christ God?

The Bible does not teach that Christ, for not having a human father, is God in nature. It mentions of other people who came into being without a human father. One example is Adam, the first man created by God, who also had no human father but is not God in nature or state of being:

“And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.”

Another example is Eve, whom God created from Adam’s rib, but also without a human father (Gen. 2:22-23). Adam and Eve were “human beings” (Gen. 1:27 Good News Bible) and do not have the same nature as God’s. So, not having a human father does not make one God in nature. The fact that the Lord Jesus Christ was conceived in the womb of a woman (Matt. 1:20) proves that He is man, not God.

Thus, after Adam and Eve, being born from a mother’s womb has always been God’s way of creating human beings (Isa. 44:2, 24), including the Lord Jesus Christ, as He Himself proved that He is man (John 8:40).

BEING BORN OF GOD DOES NOT MAKE CHRIST GOD

When the Lord Jesus Christ was baptized, God declared that Christ is His Son:

“And a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased’.” (Matt. 3:17 NIV, Emphasis Mine)

However, His being born of God does not mean that Christ is God. There are other people also referred to as “born of God,” as stated by Apostle John:

“For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world ― our faith… We know that whoever is born of God does not sin; but he who has been born of God keeps himself, and the wicked one does not touch him.”

(Reference: I John 5:4, 18 NKJV)

Verse 4 refers to those born of God who love God by obeying His commandments (I John 5:1-2). Those who are born of God are not God in nature. They are called the children of God, as further taught by Apostle John:

“Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.”

Thus, believing that Christ is God because He is born of God would lead to the conclusion that the children of God are all God in nature, which is wrong as it would go against biblical teachings. However, some might wonder how God can have children who are not God in nature. Apostle John continues to teach that becoming children of God is not a state of being but a right given by Him:

“But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.”

Using the analogy of “cows-beget-calves” will not justify their wrong belief, simply because being called the children of God is not the inheritance of God’s nature but is an honor received from Him. This honor is given by God to His chosen servants the way this great honor was also given to the Lord Jesus Christ (II Pet. 1:16–17).

BEING THE SON OF GOD DOES NOT MAKE CHRIST GOD

There are those who argue that Christ, being the begotten Son of God, is different from those whom the Bible calls the children of God. Does it mean that Christ, the Son of God, is God in nature or state of being, like His Father? The apostles further explained:

“For to which of the angels did He ever say: ‘You are My Son, Today I have begotten You’? And again: ‘I will be to Him a Father, And He shall be to Me a Son’?… So also Christ did not glorify Himself to become High Priest, but it was He who said to Him: ‘You are My Son, Today I have begotten You’.“

(Reference: Heb. 1:5; 5:5 NKJV, Emphasis Mine)

In these verses, the apostles quoted the words God spoke when He called Christ His Son, but this does not make Christ God in nature. Another example of a person God called His son is King David:

“Now therefore, thus shall you say to My servant David, ‘Thus says the LORD of hosts: ‘I took you from the sheepfold, from following the sheep, to be ruler over My people, over Israel… I will be his Father, and he shall be My son. …”

David, King of Israel, was declared by God as His son as well, but this does not make David God. Thus, Christ being called the Son of God does not make Christ God. The true God declared and glorified Christ as His Son, thus establishing His relationship to Christ as His Father.

THOSE WHO BELIEVE THAT CHRIST IS GOD WERE DECEIVED

Some people are convinced that Christ is God, even though the Bible proves this to be wrong because they were deceived into believing so. Even during the first century, the apostles had already forewarned how false prophets or false teachers would use deceptive words and destructive heresies (II Pet. 2:1, 3) leading people away from the true faith.

Such deceptive words that false teachers will speak are not from Christ and the apostles. Apostle Paul stated that false preachers will teach words as if they came from the apostles (II Thess. 2:2). For the true Christians not to be deceived, Apostle Paul reminded them not to go beyond what is written in the Holy Scriptures (I Cor. 4:6). He taught this to the faithful, not of his own accord, but because this is God’s commandment to His people (Deut. 12:32).

Therefore, those who want to know and remain in the true faith taught in the Bible about the Lord Jesus Christ must neither be swayed by the teachings of false preachers nor get confused with made-up stories about Christ. True Christians have been taught to condemn any teaching that is in contrast to or goes against the teachings of Christ and His apostles (Gal. 1:8).

IN CONCLUSION

Jesus Christ is the “Son of God,” as taught in Scripture. He is not God the Son. The term “God the Son” is unscriptural and cannot be found in the Bible. In addition, the term “God the Son” is none other than a man-made doctrine first introduced by the Catholic Church.

Christ being born of God, does not make Christ God in as much it did not make the first man Adam or Kind David God either. Moreover, the true Christians are God’s children who are also born of Him, but yet the true Christians are not God.

After Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist and raised from the water, immediately God spoke and declared from heaven very clearly, saying, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him, I am well pleased.” God did not introduce Christ as God, this alone should shut all doors to any notion that Christ is God. In addition, God declared that “…There is no God besides Me…” (Isa. 45:5 NKJV) God also declared, “…For I alone am God!…” (Isa. 46:9 NLT).

If there is anyone we should turn to to ask who the true God is, then there is no greater witness than Christ Himself, so let us turn to Christ and ask who is the true God according to him:

“After Jesus had said this, he looked up to heaven and said, “Father…

And this is eternal life: to know YOU, the ONLY TRUE GOD, and the one whom you sent — Jesus the Messiah.” (John 17:1,3 ISV, Emphasis Mine)

Therefore, Jesus clearly introduced the Father as the “ONLY TRUE GOD” and explicitly stated that the “only true God” His Father sent Him. Moreover, this not only shuts all doors to whom the true God is but knowing who the true God is is vital for one’s salvation, for Christ said it means “eternal life.” This verse is very problematic for Trinitarians because not only did Christ introduce the Father as the one and only true God, but the Holy Spirit is missing entirely in the passage, giving no trinitarian inference.
